Book Summary
angwoman: Everyone Loves A Good Hanging is a translation by J Devika of a Malayalam novel, Aarachaar, written by K R Meera. The plot traces the macabre lives of the first family of hangmen in Kolkata. Set in Chitpur, Kolkata, the novel revolves around twenty two-year old Chetna. The Grddha Mullick family traces its history back to four hundred years before Christ. They have been eyewitnesses to hangings that have changed the course of history and they love to regale others with their tales of hangmen and hangings.
In the present day, the readers meet Chetna, who after assisting her father, Phanibhushan, succeeds him in carrying the tradition of the family. She becomes the first woman executioner in India. Overshadowed by a dominating father and a captive of her brutally-manipulative lover, she finds her true, charismatic self when thrust under the harsh public eye. As events unfold she is forced into a situation where she would have to hang a member of her own family.
Hangwoman: Everyone Loves A Good Hanging was published by Penguin Books Limited in 2014. This coming-of-age novel has 448 pages and is available in hardcover. J Devika has done a fine job of translating this Malayalam novel into English.
