Sudeep’s Books
Sudeep is the author of two works of narrative non-fiction, and three novels.
In 2008 Penguin/Viking published his Red Sun: Travels in Naxalite Country, a best-selling, critically fêted work of narrative non-fiction about India’s ongoing Maoist rebellion. It was shortlisted for the Vodafone Crossword Non-Fiction Award.
His latest work, Highway 39: Journeys through a Fractured Land is released by 4th Estate, an imprint of HarperCollins. Set primarily in the conflict zones of Nagaland and Manipur, the non-fiction narrative has received major critical appreciation.
Sudeep’s best-selling debut novel, Tin Fish, was published in 2005 by Penguin, and re-published by HarperCollins in 2011. The sequel, The Avenue of Kings, the second book in the ‘Brandy Ray’ series, was published by HarperCollins to critical acclaim in 2010. A third novel, Once Upon a Time in Aparanta, a dark satire set amidst the corruption of self-proclaimed paradises, was published by Penguin in 2008; and will soon be published as an e-book.
His short stories and essays on conflict are contained in several collections. Fiction collections: Recess (Penguin); The Penguin Book of Fiction; Excess (Tehelka); Vislumbres and Wespennest. Essays on conflict in the following collections: Non-State Armed Groups in South Asia (Pentagon Press, 2011); More than Maoism: Politics, Policies and Insurgencies in South Asia (Manohar, 2012)
His next works include two non-fiction volumes, the third novel in the Brandy Ray series, and a collection of travel writing.
Sudeep’s Media Work
Sudeep began his career with The Asian Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones & Company. He was later Business Editor at Sunday magazine, published by the Ananda Bazar Patrika Group.
He joined India Today magazine as Business Editor in 1991, and left in 2002 as an Executive Editor with India Today Group. He was also Director of the India Today Conclave, which he blueprinted.
He joined Hindustan Times as Consultant Editor in 2003 and in the following year decided to take a sabbatical to pursue independent research and writing, and to consult for media houses and think-tanks. He has since helped to launch several media initiatives and worked closely with several think-tanks. His most recent media consultancy was with India Today Group in 2011. He was Editor, Content Services, for the Group; and also worked as editorial mentor.
Alongside, Sudeep is an analyst of socio-political and security issues in South Asia. He has a regular column in Mint. His media writing has been published extensively including in India Today, Business Today, AWSJ, The Outlook Group of Publications, Business World, OPEN magazine, Die Zeit, and Rolling Stone.
Sudeep is a professional member of the World Future Society, Washington D.C. He is also a trustee of Coastal Impact, a not-for-profit he co-founded in Goa with fellow scuba diving enthusiasts. He lives in Goa.
